Superintendent Message – October 27, 2021

Hello Pendleton SD Families,

It’s hard to believe we are already two months into the 21-22 school year. Overall, we are pleased with how things are going in our schools. As we head into the colder weather season and then the holiday season, we think now is a good time to review some items.

Face Coverings
All Pendleton schools continue to follow protocols for face coverings. Everyone in our school buildings must wear face coverings. In our classrooms, when students wear face coverings and keep a distance of three feet apart, the good news is that if a classmate tests positive for the virus, the other students and the teacher do NOT have to quarantine, since protocols were being followed. The correct, consistent wearing of face coverings is crucial in helping students remain in class and in helping us reach our ultimate goal of keeping students in school every day. Please see attached infographic about face coverings.

Families, thank you for encouraging your child to keep wearing their face covering at school. And students, thank you for continuing to keep your face covering on correctly during your school day. It is encouraging to see the cooperation and willingness to work together on this important practice. Students can take their masks off when they are outside for recess or other activities, and schools have face covering break protocols available to students. If you have questions or concerns about face coverings in your school for your student, please contact your school’s office.

Health & Safety Protocols
Pendleton School District buildings continue to use the Layered Health and Safety Measures (see attached graphic) to further reduce the spread of the virus in our schools. Of the 11 measures listed, the only one we are not using is regular COVID-19 testing in our schools; we are asking anyone needing a test to use a community testing place. Using this layered system is another tool in our continued efforts to successfully keep teachers, staff and students in person in school.

Although COVID cases in Umatilla county are starting to decline, our overall positive cases still remain high. In the colder winter months, when we are all indoors more, we know that basic colds and flu outbreaks are more common, and while we hope COVID numbers will continue to decrease, we must remember what we can all do to keep each other safe in schools.

Great things in our schools

Often, I hear from principals, secretaries, teachers and educational assistants how wonderful it is to see, teach, feed, share with, laugh with and interact with the thousands of Pendleton students we are serving. When I visit our schools, there are many “regular” school activities occurring, which is very encouraging. Again, I appreciate everything PSD families are doing to make that happen.
