Superintendent Message – Opening School Update

August 4, 2021

Keeping the main thing, the main thing!

I, like I am sure all of you, am excited that we are able to have all students return to school to open the 21/22 school year.  After what we all have had to experience the past year and a half, this is great news for our children and our families.  I know our staff are ready to welcome everyone back.

That being said, we will be opening school utilizing the mitigating strategies recommended by the Center for Disease Control, including the requirement for all students and adults to wear face coverings.  This requirement will be in place during regular school hours when students are present and for educational activities outside of the regular day.

The FAQ on the Face Covering Mandate is attached and includes links to the updated Ready Schools Safe Learners Resiliency Framework and state statute 333-019-1015.

I am hopeful that all families will work with us to return all students to our classrooms and keep all safe in order to minimize the impact on students and their education.  After all, getting our students back in school has been the top priority for over a year.  As Superintendent, I believe strongly in continuing all mitigating or preventive strategies at this time for the following reasons:

  1. Our county numbers are surpassing the all-time highs from the past year,
  2. The Delta variant adds a layer of unknowns and appears to be more transmissible than the original virus,
  3. Hospitalizations are on the rise locally,
  4. Upon our returning students to school last spring, we demonstrated that using all of the mitigation strategies, including face coverings, minimized transmission of the virus in schools, and
  5. In the event students come in contact with another student or adult that is case positive, they will not be required to quarantine if both parties are wearing a face covering.

We want all of our students back. We want all students and staff to be safe, and at this point in time, face coverings must be part of the equation.  The Oregon Health Authority will be reviewing the mandated requirements on a monthly basis.

Perhaps as case rates locally and statewide subside, we will see a lifting of some of the requirements that are currently in place.  Until then, I ask for your support in helping us keep our students in school with the least amount of disruptions.

Let’s be thankful for the fact that students can return full-time. Let’s keep the main thing, the main thing!

Respectfully,
Chris Fritsch

Respetuosamente,
Chris Fritsch
