Closing Out the School Year

Over the last several weeks, we have been able to return our elementary students to school full-time and our secondary students back ½ days five days a week.  We have done so by following the guidance as ordered by the Governor, OHA, ODE and our local health authority, UCoH, with fidelity.

However, recently our county cases rates have risen, and our county is moving back to the “high” risk category officially on Friday.  Lately, we are seeing more cases in our schools than we have in some time.  There is every indication that this trend may continue for the next few weeks.

Therefore, we will finish the 2020-2021 school year with no further changes to our current operations; elementary schools will remain in-person and secondary students will finish the year in hybrid as they have since March 29th.  I arrived at this conclusion based on the above but also taking into consideration that we can safely keep our secondary students distanced, thus minimizing the number of exclusions in the event of a positive case in our schools, and students and staff have settled into a consistent schedule.  By the time we implement one more transition, there would be three weeks of school left, and in my opinion, there would be negligible if any advantages in doing so.

By stabilizing the remaining days of school this year, we can thoughtfully plan for any summer opportunities and begin creating a final plan to fully open schools in the fall.  I know that the circumstances that we have faced have put tremendous pressure on all of us.  To your credit, your children’s ability to adapt, and the dedicated work of our staff, we are nearing the end that I am sure we are all anxious to put behind us.  It is important for us to take what we have learned and apply what we can moving forward.

In the meantime, please do your part to reduce the spread of the virus and its variants.  Utilize the universal precautions over the next several months to ensure the opening of several vital community businesses and events as well as opening schools in the fall.  I would ask that you consider the advantages and disadvantages of immunizations for yourself and family and do so if you are so inclined.

Looking forward to a fresh start and smooth opening in the fall of 2021.

Respectfully,
Chris Fritsch

Respetuosamente,
Chris Fritsch
