Letter to Parents from Melissa Sandven, Principal

March 15, 2020
Dear Pendleton High School Parents,

As you know, in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Oregon schools are closed through March 31. We encourage students to continue their studies at home during this school closure. Students can log on to Home Access to see all assignments and complete any make-up work that is not completed. Many of their teachers post information and assignments on web-based platforms like Google Classroom and Moodle. Teachers will not be posting new assignments over the closure, however, students can work ahead on some upcoming assignments and prepare for upcoming exams. Our students who are enrolled in online classes should continue to work on these classes if they have access to WI-FI and an electronic device.

Khan Academy has a free website with high-quality instructional videos sorted in all core content areas. For example, go to khanacademy.com, go to Courses in top left corner, click on Algebra, and at the left, you will see sequential units with lessons organized by topic. Each topic has videos and practice questions. Khan Academy also provides templates for daily schedules for students during school closures. Put in “student schedules during school closures” in the search bar on the website to find these resources.

Encourage your students to read. Many of them are reading novels in their English classes and informational textbooks and articles from other classes. Encourage them to read anything of interest: books of their choice, newspapers, and blogs. If they are taking Spanish, they can make flashcards for vocabulary and verb tenses.

These are challenging times for our nation and global community. Thank you for doing the most important job in the world: parenting. We will get through this. Please feel free to contact me anytime if you have questions or concerns. Go Bucks!
